SWINE:

CALAMITY COLEY- SIXTH GRADE 4-H MEMBER AT MACON CO. JUNIOR HIGH. RECENTLY PARTICIPATED IN THE CENTRAL REGION AND STATE 4-H MARKET HOG SHOW. CALAMITY EXHIBITED A PEN OF 3 AS WELL AS 5 SINGLES AT THE SHOWS. SOME OF HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDED A 6TH & 8TH PLACE FINISH WITH HER PEN OF 3 HOGS. A TOP 5 FINISH IN SHOWMANSHIP AT STATE, AND A 2ND PLACE ANIMAL AT THE REGION AND STATE. SHE WAS NAMED 6TH PLACE IN BEST OVERALL EXHIBITOR FOR HER AGE DIVISION AT STATE. WHICH IS COMPRISED OF RESULTS FROM HER SHOWMANSHIP, HOW HER ANIMALS PLACED, A SKILL A THON SCORE (PLACED 5TH IN STATE) AND A CARCASS SCORE FOR A PIG THAT SHE DESIGNATED FOR THAT PART OF THE SHOW. THE ANIMAL WAS ULTRASOUNDED FOR PERCENT LEAN, BACKFAT MEASUREMENT AND LOIN EYE MEASUREMENT (PORK CHOP). CALAMITY’S ENTRY WAS 62.62 % LEAN, HAD 0.41 OF BACKFAT AND HAD A LOIN EYE MEASUREMENT OF 10.95 INCHES. THE CHAMPION OF THE STATE SHOW WAS FROM WILLIAMSON COUNTY AND SOLD FOR $ 7.00 PER POUND OR $ 1,834.00. THE RESERVE CHAMPION WAS FROM CLAY CO. AND SOLD FOR $930.00. THE PEN OF 3 CHAMPION WAS FROM SMITH CO. (HOLLY DICKENS) AND HER PEN SOLD FOR $ 820.00. THIS YEAR’S SHOW WAS MORE COMPETITIVE AS ANY BEFORE WITH LOTS OF QULAITY EXHIBITORS AND EXHIBITS.
HORSE SHOW:

Pictured above is Nicholas Bussell, Nicholas along with three other Macon Co. 4-H members participated in the Central Region Horse Show and State Show as well. Not pictured Paige Ferguson, Heath Dodson, and Dustin Dodson. Nicholas placed 1st in Jr. Western Pleasure as well as a 2nd with his Horse Calico Express. Paige Ferguson placed 1st in the Sr. Pony Barrel Racing on Snickers. Dustin placed 3rd in Sr. Pole Bending and 5th in Sr. Barrel Racing. Heath placed 7th in Sr. Barrel Racing on Lacy.
SHEEP EXPO:
Macon County 4-H members involved in the 4-H Sheep project completed their summer show schedule at the State 4-H Sheep show in Cookeville, TN at the Hyder/Burks Ag. Pavilion. The event took place July 25-28th, with over 700 hundred youth involved from around the state. Pictured below are some of the exhibitors from Macon County that participated in the show. Macon County 4-H had a total of 45 head of livestock registered for the show. Several of the 4-H members exhibited Market Lambs, Commercial ewes and competed in a Skill-a-thon contest that challenged their knowledge of sheep. Sarah Fitzgerald exhibited a Registered Hampshire ewe that received champion at the show. 4-H members had a good Spring & Summer in their projects attending several shows and learning some great life skills in leadership, responsibility and citizenship. All members in the 4-H projects will be awarded and recognized at the annual 4-H Awards Banquet coming up this winter.


Sarah Fitzgerald pictured above won several awards with the Commercial ewe lamb that she exhibited at the recent State 4-H/FFA Livestock Expo. The Ewe lamb born in Feb. 2005 was chosen as the Champion Farm Bred Commercial Ewe, and Champion Black Face Cross Commercial Ewe. As well the ewe was named Reserve Champion Commercial Ewe Lamb. This ewe lamb looks to have won more honors at the expo. than any others exhibited during the show
